How Do You Want to Boot Linux ?

How do you want to boot Linux is depends on how you do plan to use it. There a few ways can be use to boot your favourite Linux distribution. As am i,prefer Ubuntu 11.04 to be dual boot with my Windows 7.

Standalone

Standalone refers to computers on which Linux is the only bootable operating system that is installed. Converting one of your systems into a standalone Linux system requires a certain level of commitment to Linux because you can’t run other operating systems .Though you can still run windows program by WINE.

Dual-Boot

dual boot windows and linux
If you still need the ability to run Windows software ,you can do dual-boot. By using dual booting, you install Linux on other spare partitions and configure your system so that it allowing you to choose booting Linux or Windows when you turn it on. Dual booting is a great alternative to standalone Linux systems if you have to depend on certain Windows applications but still want to explore the power and freedom that Linux systems provide. An alternative to dual booting is to run a package such as VirtualBox that lets you run Windows within a virtual machine on your Linux system. Solutions such as WINE provide software for running Windows applications directly on Linux systems without requiring a complete Windows installation as VirtualBox does.

Live CDs

boot linux using live cd
ubuntu LiveCD
Live CDs are the best alternative if you simply want to experiment with Linux without changes the existing computer system. Live CD containing a bootable computer operating system. It is are a great way of experimenting with different Linux distributions until you find the one that’s right for you  without spending a lot of time installing and configuring each test distribution along the way. Live CD versions of many Linux distributions are available such as Ubuntu and Puppy Linux.

An alternative to Live CD is Live USB flash. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium. UNetbootin  allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora,Puppy Linux and other Linux distributions without burning a CD.It also run on windows and linux.
